Today's reading: Deut. 7-9; Mark 15
As Moses continues speaking to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 7-9, he highlights several points from their less-than-glamorous history thus far after leaving Egypt. They became a nomadic people, traversing the desert for forty years provoking the Lord to anger and remaining rebellious against Him to that very day (9:7). Moses exhorted the people to not forget the Lord, but to pay close attention the laws and commands he gave them so they may live and increase and possess the land the Lord promised (8:1). He reminded them of the manna: “[God] humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna…to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. (8:3)” Bread sustains but does not guarantee life. Life is God’s gift to all who live by and trust in His Word. So we too must rely on God’s Word as our true source of life – no matter where we’ve been, where we are, or where we’re going.
Lord, I believe your Word is true. Help me pay close attention to what it says so that I will not stumble but rather be lifted up because of the life it brings.
Amen

Good prayer. His words keep us even as we keep them. Amen.
